Things I have built and learned

A timeline of work, research, experiments, side projects, and the achievements I remain proud of.

2021 - now

Software Engineer

Currently a software engineer at an Australian health tech startup. My job ranges from simply Excel queries, to own an entire product, to cloud infrastructures. We (a team of 4 people) did an entire application migration from Angular to React. After 7 months developing under stealth mode, we just launched without throughoutly testing. There are good and bad sides. Good? We launched. Bad? Trust me, we spent the next months staying up late all night and working overtime to work on bugs and vulnerabilities.

What I am proud of:

  • Developed a drawing application from scratch.
  • Developed a form builder similar to JotForm from scratch.
  • Conversational SMS for practices. Integrated with Twilio and Stripe.
  • Wrote a testing framework for internal use, even though it’s never been used.

Freelance

  • Developed landing website for a university research group.

  • Developed a plugin that accepts Momo payments (a Vietnamese unicorn) for SMEs using WordPress. Partnered with 10 businesses at its peak. First time learning PHP and I hated it.

Side hustle

  • Worked on Overread - a documentation as a service platform. Stopped after 5 months of development. Frankly speaking, I still think there is a gap in the market. You can read more of it here: Old mate: Overread.

  • Working on a generative AI project, coming soon.

2020 - 2021

Side gig

Developed a web extention that recommends user better products (a balance between price and quality) when shopping at ecommerce sites in Vietnam. It had 500+ MAUs at its peak.

Later shutdown due to operational cost exceeds revenue. Affiliate marketing isn’t a good revenue stream I learnt.

Good memories? Shoppe blocked our IP multiple times due to spike in traffic. I had to quickly spin up another EC2 instance to maintain up time. It was 1 AM in Australia.

Marketing Assistant

Maintained and run marketing campaign for a defense company. Learnt how marketing campaigns are structured, how to analysed keywords, and first time get to see a WordPress admin dashboard.

What makes the time there worthy? The people. Everyone was super nice. John, Joe, Oliver, Cindy, David, if somehow you are reading this, I want to say thank you. You are kind people and all the best will come to you.

And John has somehow been my mentor since then.

2019 - 2020

These research projects were sponsored by an Australian defense company.

Research Project | AI-Enabled Information Technologies for Multi-Robot Coordination.

What I am proud of:

  • Created the testbed that established the foundation for later research groups.
  • Developed a novel algorithm for multi-robot similtaneous arrival that can avoid dynamic obstacles.
  • Developed a task synchronisation framework in a distributed multi-robot system.
  • Deployed the algorithms on real robots and operated in real-life scenarios.

Research Intern | Application of Neural Network to Reduce Stationary and Non-stationary Noise in Recorded Speech.

There weren’t any particular achivements that I am proud of. This project was mostly about research on the feasibility of different ML techniques to effectively remove background noise. It was the first time I got my hands on generative MLs (GAN) and high performance computing.

Side project | Automate Arch installation script

I developed my passion for Linux during this time. And who loves Linux doesn’t love Arch?

Wrote a script to automate the process of installing Arch and pretty much created my own Linux distro.

2018 - 2019

Embedded Software Engineer Intern

  • Implemented libraries for UHF card reader and multi-functional energy meter in a building management system. The multi-functional energy meter remains to be my most starred and forked repo.
  • Automated the product distribution process

What I am proud of? The bonus salary was dang high (in Vietnam) due to my performance, and I made some friendships that last til now.

2017 - 2018

I devote this time mostly for learning C/C++ and embedded systems.

Side project | A machine to farment black garlic

Teamed up with 2 others (one is a Master of Biology) to buld a machine to ferment garlic (to make it black garlic - healthy product). At its best, the nutrition metrics exceeded typical black garlic products on the market. I considered it as a lucky hit. Later failed miserably due to the lack of knowledge in control theory.

2014 - 2015

Teams up with another to develop a solution that prevent motobikes from crossing the railroad crossings. It was a problem in Vietnam, several incidents happened, but I guess people just want to save several seconds of their time. Won a few prizes in local engineering fair, a prize in national engineering fair, and several scholarships to Vietnamese universities.

2013 - 2014

Robot to help in lab

  • Teamed up with 2 others to build a robot to assist teachers in lab environment with ability to move around, controlled heater, and auto-triggered air cleanser when toxics detected. All were controlled remotely via a dashboard on a laptop. The robot took me to an engineering national fair, didn’t win any prize tho.

Learn history website

  • Teamed up with another to build a website to teach history to highschool students - that was my first time knowing web development.
